2016 Label Update

Why Your % DV Doesn't Match the Old Label

If a product's % Daily Value looks different than you remember — with the exact same recipe — it's not a math error. The FDA updated the reference Daily Values themselves in 2016, and the rollout finished in 2020–2021.

This is not a rounding rule change. The rounding increments are the same as always — only the Daily Values used as the denominator changed. See the actual rounding rules →

Why the Same Product Shows a Different %

% DV is a fraction: your product's actual amount ÷ the Daily Value. When the Daily Value (the denominator) changes, the percentage changes — even if the numerator, your product's real nutrient content, is identical.

DV went up → % DV goes down

Total Fat's DV rose from 65g to 78g. A product with 36g of fat per serving showed 55% DV under the old rules — the identical 36g now shows 46% DV.

DV went down → % DV goes up

Sodium's DV dropped from 2,400mg to 2,300mg. A product with 1,060mg of sodium per serving showed 44% DV under the old rules — the identical 1,060mg now shows 46% DV.

Which Nutrients Became Mandatory (or Stopped Being)

Newly mandatory

Vitamin D and Potassium must now be declared with actual amount and % DV. Added Sugars became its own required line under Total Sugars.

Moved to voluntary

Vitamin A and Vitamin C are no longer required (unless added to the food or a claim is made about them). Many labels simply stopped showing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the FDA change how rounding works in 2016?

No. The rounding increments themselves — nearest 5 or 10 calories, the 0.5g/1g fat tiers, the 2%/5%/10% vitamin and mineral tiers — trace back to the original 1993 rule and are unchanged. What changed in 2016 was the reference Daily Values (the denominators used to calculate % DV) and which nutrients are mandatory. See the full FDA Rounding Rules guide for the actual rounding increments, which this page doesn't change.

Do I need to recalculate old labels?

Yes, if you're still using pre-2020 Daily Values in your calculations. Any label created or updated after your compliance date must use the current DVs (sodium 2,300mg, fiber 28g, calcium 1,300mg, etc.) — using the old numbers would misstate your % DV even if your gram amounts are correct.

Why did the same product's % DV change even though nothing in the recipe changed?

Because % DV is a fraction — actual amount divided by the Daily Value. If the DV in the denominator changes, the resulting percentage changes even when the numerator (your product's actual nutrient content) stays exactly the same.

What's the asterisk (*) next to some nutrients?

It marks a unit-of-measure change, not just a number change. Vitamin A moved from IU to mcg RAE, Vitamin D from IU to mcg, Vitamin E from IU to mg alpha-tocopherol, Niacin from mg to mg NE, and Folate from mcg to mcg DFE. You can't convert these with simple math — they use different measurement systems entirely.
